Join us for the Massed Choir for Opening Worship, Sunday, August 1
We have invited choirs from across the Presbytery to join us for our opening worship service by singing in a massed choir. If you would enjoy being a part of this as well, we are counting on it! The choir will sing 2 anthems and rehearsal will be in Hudson Auditorium at 6:00 pm. Copies of the music will be available at the Registration table.

Meet our Clinicians
Adult Choral Clinician- Lloyd Larson
For over 25 years, Lloyd Larson has been an active composer and arranger for several major publishing companies of church and school music.His music compositions and arrangements number well over 1,000 published works – including choral anthems, numerous extended Christmas and Easter works, keyboard collections, vocal solo and duet collections, instrumental solo and ensemble publications, orchestrations, and handbell settings. It is his work in the local church, though, which continues to be the catalyst for much of his writing. He is an active participant in his own local church where he currently directs the adult choir in addition to regularly being involved in worship planning and leadership.
Originally from central Illinois, Lloyd received a B.A. in music from Anderson University in IN and a Master’s degree in church music and composition from The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in KY. He has done subsequent graduate work at Southern Baptist Seminary, Ohio State University, and Northern Baptist Theological Seminary in IL.
Lloyd is married to his college sweetheart, Marci. They have three children – Stephanie (married to Brandt), Philip (married to Kylee), and Jeff who is a college student – along with two grandchildren, Addie and Eli.He now makes his home in the Minneapolis, MN area.
Adult Handbell Clinician- Monica McGowan
Monica S. McGowan currently serves as the musical and artistic director for Twin Cities Bronze in Minnesota where she also rings in the ensemble. Ms.McGowan holds a Bachelor of Science in Music Education from Chadron State College, Chadron, Nebraska. She has directed handbell choirs in Episcopal, Methodist, and Lutheran churches from Louisiana to Minnesota for over 15 years. Ms.McGowan brings her background of education, teaching and extensive training in Handbells and Handchimes to both the conducting podium and the workshop setting in local, regional, and international conferences and clinics, handbell festivals and music camps, and events and seminars of the American Guild of English Handbell Ringers, Inc. (AGEHR). She has received handbell instruction from Donald Allured, William Payn, Dr. Paul Rosene, Michael Keller, and William Griffin. She was accredited in the first AGEHR Master Class in conducting receiving certification as Massed Conductor, Level One. Ms. McGowan has served on the Area and National Board of directors for AGEHR, Inc. and her articles have appeared in the Overtones magazine.
Youth Choral Clinician- Patrick Walders
A native of Buffalo, New York, Patrick Walders maintains an active career as a professional vocalist, music educator, church musician, clinician, and conductor. As Director of Choral Activities at James Madison University, he directs the highly select JMU Chorale (70 voices) and Madison Singers (25 voices), oversees the Men’s Chorus, Women’s Chorus and Treble Chamber Choir, teaches undergraduate and graduate conducting classes, and graduate Choral Literature. As President-Elect of the Virginia American Choral Director’s Association, he is especially proud of the strong ACDA student chapter at JMU where they host an annual High School Choralfest and Men’s Chorus Invitational, which bring upwards of 450 High School students to campus every year who sit side-by-side collegiate members of the JMU choirs. For four seasons, he was the Associate Conductor of the National Philharmonic Chorale, and Artistic Director of the National Philharmonic Singers- the chamber choir formed from the nucleus of the Chorale which is based in the state-of-the-art Performing Arts Center at Strathmore located just outside of Washington, D.C. He made his National Philharmonic debut in December 2006, conducting Handel’s Messiah, and his Kennedy Center debut conducting John Hilliard’s Piano Concerto No.2, in January of 2007.
Dr. Walders has been preparing and conducting major works since 1995 and his preparatory work has been highlighted by the Czech National Orchestra’s performance of Carmina Burana, in 2006, and the University of Maryland’s production of Ravel’s, L’Enfant et les sortilége in 2005. A baritone/countertenor, Dr. Walders has sung professionally throughout the northeastern United States as a soloist and chorister.
Dr. Walders earned his DMA in conducting from the University of Maryland-College Park. He holds a bachelor's degree in music education from the State University of New York (SUNY) College at Fredonia, taught public school (7-12 grade) in Western New York, and earned a master's degree in choral conducting from the Westminster Choir College. Highly sought for clinics, workshops, and festivals, Dr. Walders has conducted many choral events and honor choirs for middle schools, high schools and colleges throughout the northeastern United States. Additionally, he is an active member of, and Virginia’s representative for, the National Collegiate Choral Organization, as well as a member of the Virginia Music Educator’s Association. When the calendar allows, Dr. Walders enjoys writing and arranging choral pieces. More recently, his arrangement of A Coventry Carol was released by Shawnee Press.
Children's Choral Clinician- Chris Barry
Chris Barry is the Director of Children and Youth Music Ministries at Peachtree Presbyterian Church in Atlanta GA. He holds an undergraduate degree in Music Education from Berry College where he was director of the Berry College Men’s Ensemble. Upon graduation Chris taught music at the Faith Lutheran School in Marietta, Georgia. He recently earned his Masters degree in Choral Conducting from The University of Georgia, where he conducted the UGA Men’s Glee Club under the direction of Allen Crowell, and was the Graduate Assistant for Choral Activities. Chris joined the Peachtree Staff in January of 2009 and works closely with colleague and mentor, Mary Hoffman, who was our children's clinician in 2005.
A fun fact about this young, dynamic, musician is that Chris grew up in Peachtree Presbyterian Church and has been an active part of Music Ministries there since the age of four, beginning in the Cherub Choir. He was a member of the Peachtree Youth Choir, Bells, and the Peachtree Handbell Quartet throughout high school. Chris and his wife, Jennie, were married in the Peachtree Sanctuary in June 2007. They reside in Tucker, Georgia and are the grateful parents of a brand new infant daughter born in December, 2009.
Youth and Children's Handbell Clinician- Mark Gourley
Mark Gourley is Director of Music at First Presbyterian Church in Fayetteville, NC. Mark earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Music Education from Atlantic Christian College in Wilson, NC (now Barton College) and has done extensive graduate study in Sacred Music at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Wake Forest, NC and in Organ and Choral Music at East Carolina University, Greenville, NC. He has earned the Level I and Level II Certification in Orff-Schulwerk from East Carolina University. Mark also holds the General Handbell Director Certification, Level I from AGEHR.
He is a member of the American Choral Directors Association, the American Guild of English Handbell Ringers, the American Guild of Organists, Choristers Guild, the Presbyterian Association of Musicans and the Fellowship of United Methodists in Music and Woraship Arts.
Mark is the Dean of Cape Fear Chapter of the American Guild of Organists. A past President of the Fellowship of United Methodist in Music and Worship Arts, he currently serves as Treasurer. Mark has chaired the NC United Methodist Conference Handbell Festival for many years. He served on the Area III Board of the AGEHR for ten years, where he held the office of NC State Chair, Chair-Elect, Chair and Past Chair. He has taught many handbell classes for Area II events and frequently teachers and conducts workshops and festivals.
Organ Clinician- David Eicher
David Eicher is Hymnal Editor with the Presbyterian Publishing Corporation, Louisville, Kentucky. Prior to his current position, David was a church musician in Northwest Indiana for almost 30 years. In addition to church work, he served as Accompanist/Assistant Director of the South Bend Chamber Singers from 1990-2007, and Accompanist for the Northwest Indiana Symphony Orchestra Chorus from 2006-2007.
David holds degrees in organ and church music from Manchester College and Valparaiso University. He is the Immediate Past President of The Hymn Society in the United States and Canada, and also holds professional memberships in the Presbyterian Association of Musicians, the American Guild of Organists, and the Association for Reformed & Liturgical Worship.
Harp Clinician- Virginia Bethune
Virginia Redhead Bethune, harpist, has been a harp instructor for 6 years and on staff at Montreat in 2008 and Massanetta for 2008 and 2009. After a lifetime as a pianist and organist, and at age 60, she began playing the harp. Through the selling of harp cd's, Virginia has helped to raise $85,000 to build a Habitat for Humanity House. The November 2009 issue of A Call to Worship, published by the PCUSA Office of Theology and Worship, includes her article "Full of Sound and Music, Signifying Healing". As a Certified Music Practitioner, Virginia has been a Musician-in-Residence at UVA Hospital since 2007. Virginia and her husband Dick, a retired Presbyterian pastor, reside at Sunnyside near Massanetta Springs.
Praise and Worship Leader- David Merrill
David shares with us, "I am looking forward to praising and worshipping our Lord and Savior with you this year at the Massanetta Springs Church Music and Bible Conferences. Currently, I am the emergent worship leader for our praise and worship band, 'New Stone' at First Presbyterian Church in Winchester, VA. I hold a Bachelor of Arts in Music from Methodist University in Fayetteville, NC and I am currently working on a Masters degree in Vocal Performance at Shenandoah University in Winchester, VA. On the side I coach a boys gymnastics team, as well as teach voice and piano lessons. I am hoping to bring the joy of emergent worship music to the conference this year as well as incorporate electronic music with digital technology. World Drumming Clinician- Lindsay Sensabaugh
Lindsay is no stranger to the Church Music Conference as she has attended this event for much of her life! Lindsay completed a Bachelor of Music Education degree with a concentration in Elementary Education from Bridgewater College and we are drawing on her love of music, children and instruments for our children this summer. Lindsay has brought World Drumming into her classrooms and her students have thrived with the opportunity to grow musically with these dynamic percussion instruments. We are looking forward to Lindsay sharing her drums and this new component with our children in K-5th grades.
Lindsay is also distinguished as a piano accompanist and her Senior recital at Bridgewater College showcased her dual focus and skill on both piano and trombone. Currently Lindsay is an Elementary Music teacher at Nathaniel Greene Elementary School where she teaches general music, beginner band, and co-directs a musical each year performed by elementary school students.
