SALT- November 12-14, 2010
The Registration Flyer is here! The vision for SALT is to support our local churches in their efforts to nurture and encourage youth in the Christian faith. Knowing that we all need resourcing and renewal in our work as youth ministers, SALT seeks to bring youth and adults together to encourage the formational (theological) and informational (programatic) practices of youth ministry. We want to help you sustain good theology in youth ministry as well as foster ways to improve the ministry you already engage in. We welcome all to this endeavor and may God guide our efforts as we strive to be the salt in the world. SALT is a new intiative of Massanetta Springs and we are grateful for the support of the Synod wide Presbytery Inititatives Funds. The weekend will include Keyshops, Workshops, music, recreation, worship, fellowship, shared meals, time to rest, hike and play, and hopefully lots of rockin' on the porch. Leadership
What's a Keyshop? A keyshop blends the best of a keynote (talking leader who knows a lot of stuff) and a workshop (hands on involvement in the topic). This year, the Keyshops with Erika will bring strong formational and theological info to us from I Peter and around the theme of "God's Generous Grace".
A talented and multifacted guy, Bryan has combined his love for people, music, and making a difference to fulfill his "call". Recording artist, Hunger Action Enabler, reteat leader, worship leader, teacher, preacher, father and husband blend together to fill his days. Until All Are Fed is Bryan's current project that combines music, hunger awareness and ALL OF US in the production of the cd. Go to his website to read more and to pledge support of the cd production. The final product will be rousing and inspiring music and proceeds from the sales will resource the Hunger Programs of our church. Please check out the Until All Are Fed website and support this dyanamic and passionate guy. We welcome Bryan back to Massanetta as he has served as a collegiate leader and preacher with our annual Bible and Church Music Conferences.
Workshops There are 2 workshops blocks on Saturday. Please select 3 when registering. 1. How Ya Doin'? Being connected is core to being in youth ministry. At times the most important thing we can do is provide a ministry of presence, where people know they are welcomed and encouraged to be themselves. Join Steve Mathews to explore ways to engage "teachable moments" and open communication with youth that is honest and safe. Steve Matthews is a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Durham NC. 2. Grumbling and Grace - We aren't the only ones who get frustrated with people in our lives and grumble! The Bible, much of our literature and media, are built on human conflicts. But, being involved in conflict is a difficult and exhausting thing to do. This workshop with Joshua Lovell will give us tools for dealing with difficult people and relationships (and help us see if we are the difficult one) and ways to bring grace, understanding, and "God-ness" to turn grumbling into goodness. Joshua Lovell is a Middle School Guidance Counselor having recieved his Masters in Counseling from the College of William and Mary. He has worked for a middle school in the Baltimore City School System and begins a new position at Fort Defiance High School in Augusta County, VA this fall. Josh grew up coming to this event when he was in High School and has also served as a Middle School Conference Enabler and Workshop Director.
3. Are You In There God? Can we find messages of faith, hope, grace, love and other God-ideas in the movies, music, media and technology of our world? This workshop will help us develop lenses that show us God in our midst- even in pop culture- and then how to do this in your youth group. 4. God's Good Gift of Sexuality (Workshop for youth): There it is, folks. The "S" word. SEX. In this workshop, we'll open the floodgates of conversation about this HUGE topic. How is a Christian understanding of sexuality different from the views we see in our world? What do the Bible and the church have to say about sexuality, and how can Christians have such diverse views? What's love got to do with it? Bring your own questions along with your heart, mind, soul, and sense of humor, and let's talk about what's on everyone's mind! God's Good Gift of Sexuality (Workshop for adults): Who among us doesn't feel a bit squeamish at the thought of talking about SEX with young people? Why is the church THE place to have these conversations? This workshop for adult leaders in youth ministry will help us prepare ourselves, our church, and our youth to tackle this important topic in healthy, fun, and creative ways. Workshop leaders will share stories, tips, resources, and materials from their successful programs on human sexuality, and will help you set goals and begin planning for similar programs in your church. Gair McCullough is the Minister of Youth at Duke Memorial United Methodist Church in Durham, NC. Formerly, she served as a youth advisor, confirmation coach, and Elder at Cary Presbyterian Church in Cary, NC, where she helped develop and lead retreats for high school youth on human sexuality from 1998 to 2010.
5. College and Church - Life changes dramatically when you hit college- how are God and church a part of that? Do you ever feel as a collegiate that the church doesn't have a place for you anymore? How can the church support collegiates? This workshop will focus on collegiate ministries in the first session and the role the church can play in supporting and undergirding young adults beyond youth group, in the second session. Scott Phillips did most of his growing up in San Diego where he became a big fan of the Chargers and the beach. It was there his family also became Presbyterian. A graduate of San Diego State University and Princeton Seminary, Scott has served most of his ordained ministry in Washington State. Before coming to Raleigh as the new Campus Minister, Scott was the pastor of a New Church Development in Vancouver, WA. Beyond his parish ministry Scott has a strong commitment and involvement at the Montreat Conference Center. Although the move across the country was a big one, Scott, his wife Melanie and son Martin are enjoying their time exploring what it means to be a North Carolinian. 6.Re-energizing Energizers - Floppy arms, backwards cues, fumbling directions, lazy legs....yeah, not cool if you are leading an energizer. Come learn the BEST ways to lead these crazy but awesome dances and maybe even create a new one for SALT and our friends back home! 7. S O S - Seconds of Sanity- Breathe. Just breathe. That's one of the messages of this workshop. Join Don Makin, a yoga instructor and pastor, to learn and practice ways to center yourself, clear your thoughts, find a good place of prayer and meditation, and do a little yoga too! Don Makin is the Senior Pastor of the Christiansburg Presbyterian Church in VA and is a Certifiied Yoga Instructor. 8. Good Gracious! God's Gifts! - God has called each of us and has given us gifts. How in the world do we figure out what our gifts are and what we are called to do? This "call" or "voca" may lead to a vocation. It may not. Discerning our vocational gifts and our spiritual gifts will be the focus of this workshop with Kristin Heimstra. A shameless believer of human potential and a motivator to many, Kristin is as dynamic and energetic about career issues as a nice person can be. Her core belief that we are created in God's image and therefore more powerful and creative then we give ourselves credit for, is the foundation for the amazing and personal process of discerning our individual calls. She has facilitated this joyful and empowering journey of self-discovery for people of all ages and backgrounds. Kristin Hiemstra is a member of Westminster and also works as a Guidance Counselor at East Chapel Hill High School in Chapel Hill, NC. 9. Swinging Theology - Not swing dancing, but swinging from the trees at Massanetta's Ropes Course and the new Zip Line. Come to this workshop to learn about trust, faith, friendship and grace. Massanetta Springs has a strong cadre' of trained and certified Ropes Course Leaders who will be with us for these workshops.
